As a reaction to my little essay for SUBEX we had some feedback complaining about a decrease in Quality.
NOW you got me started - I love that topic „smile“
TOURISM IN EGYPT NEEDS QUALITY INSTEAD OF QUANTITY
Preamble: I dont know how each one of you spends his vacations, so please consider the following directed towards the remaining majority of people.
Personally and as a couple we are not frequent holiday makers, but once we go we consider ourselves a booster for every local economy „smile“
QALITY INSTEAD OF QUANTITY - Follow-up article on "Egypt - the silent Death of paradiese" by SUBEX - The ART of DIVING
As long as Egypt continues its path of irresponsible mass-tourism, the economy here will only work as long as the touristic silos are filled to the max.
If a waiter earns a basic salary of 600 LE (aprox. 70 €)
+ flat (luxurious 6 bed-one-room flats without privacy and sleeping in shifts)
+ food (yeah, I've eaten some of the hotel-staff "food" - I think bio-pork is raised better)
+ tips (naturally after the manager and head-waiter deducted their fair 80% share)
= maybe 1200 LE per month.
WHAT THE HELL DID YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN?
(And please: I know that there are other examples - but in general the picture is true.)
The hotels also cannot make a profit, having dumping-room rates dictated by i.e. booking-dot-com or major tour operators.
Thats why our orignal statement has a clear message:
Quality has to be paid for!
Whoever flies to Egypt with the next-best 399€-All-In offer, justs gets what he (or she, it, ... political correctness, please!) paid for.
Put together an individual trip, and you get more. More Service (there ARE fantastic hotels) more local spirit, more culture. And honestly: 3-week-all-in-beach vacations are rather boring, arent they?
And in addition you are directly helping the local econony and service infrastructure, the small shops and local tour providers. And - big surprise - as soon as people can stop fighting for their lifes they are suddenly capable of doing some good for their country.
Think of Egypt 20,30 years ago: That was the time Egypt made itself a name of hospitality and quality. But - another unexpected suprise, tada! - you had to pay 2000 € (or similiar amounts in another currency) for a 2-PAX vcataion - no word about All-In-Stuff, btw!
If this mentality "I want it all but I dont want to pay!" continues it will not only ruin Egypt, but every other holiday destination that is flooded with cheap offers.
And this is true for every other touristic sector as well, in my case sports diving:
NOBODY can offer responsible diving for 35$ per day while at the same time paying fair salaries without enslaving his employees in 14h-shifts with 4-6 dives per day -each day!
You know our prices (or you can look them up) - and hopefully our philosophy.
