Do you want to learn how to navigate by the natural waypoints of a reef and be able to find your way back to the entry and exit points at every dive?

Would you like to learn how to discover the highlights of every reef for you and your buddy, even without a guide?

Do you like to become able to use a compass and combine this with the natural waypoints to navigate safely under water?



Course aims

  • The aim of this course is to teach you how to navigate safely under water using natural and non-natural waypoints and addtionally track your way by using a compass.
  • The course participants will learn how to find entry and exit points safely and will be able to correctly estimate the time needed.
  • Basic skills like handling your equipment and that of your diving buddy, respecting and following environmental conditions, underwater signals and communication will be repeated and clarified.
  • We will talk about the handling of dangerous situations, especially loosing your buddy or diving in strong current as well as navigation to and from the boat.
  • To enable you to plan, commit and finish your dives properly we will discuss the respiratory minute volume (RMV), we will calculate the air consumption and define the minimum reserve, max depth and bottom time.

Course contents

  • 2 diving lessons combining natural and compass navigation training.
  • 5 theory lessons during  briefing and debriefing: natural navigation, compass navigation, combination of natural and compass navigation, special navigation techniques, navigation as a sport.
  • SSI certification "Navigation" (SSI fee applies as a surcharge)

Prerequisites & further information

  • Teaching materials will be provided for you with all SUBEX specialty courses.
  • With only three more SSI Specialties your SSI Open Water Diver is upgraded to SSI Advanced Open Water Diver.

  • Prerequisite for any SSI Specialty course is an Open Water or Junior Open Water Certification by SSI or another aknowledged diving association, like PADI OWD or CMAS *
